A High Yield Savings Account is a savings account with a variable interest rate typically higher than retail brick-and-mortar banks. High Yield Savings Accounts are limited to a maximum of nine (9) online and telephone withdrawals or debits per monthly statement cycle. Interest on High Yield Savings Accounts is compounded daily and posted to accounts monthly.
American Express Personal Savings accounts are not meant for everyday spending. ATM cards, debit cards, or checks are not provided. You may make up to nine (9) withdrawals or transfers out of your High Yield Savings Account during a monthly statement cycle.
American Express High Yield Savings Accounts are not meant for everyday spending. Savings accounts like our High Yield Savings Account were historically required to limit the number of withdrawals and transfers that could be made to six (6) withdrawals and transfers per statement cycle. This requirement came from a Federal Reserve Board regulation - Reserve Requirements for Depository Institutions (12 C.F.R. 204 Regulation D).
The Federal Reserve Board revised this regulation in April, 2020 to permit banks to remove the six withdrawal / transfer limit. As a result, to give you High Yield Savings Account customers additional flexibility to access their funds, Personal Savings customers may now make a maximum of nine (9) withdrawals or transfers per statement cycle.* There is no limit on the number of deposits that can be made.
*A statement cycle is the calendar period during which one banking statement is generated. A statement cycle usually begins on the day of the month the account is opened. For example, if an account was opened on the 10th of a month, then the statement cycle will usually end on the 10th day of every subsequent month.
The following table summarizes which transactions are subject to transaction limits. The only way that a customer can withdraw money without being subject to the transaction limits is to call us and request that we send a withdrawal via check.

American Express Personal Savings offers Certificate of Deposit (CD) accounts. These are accounts with fixed interest rates and seven (7) different maturity terms to choose from. Funds cannot be withdrawn from the account prior to the maturity date without a penalty. Personal Savings offers CD Terms of 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, 24 months, 36 months, 48 months, and 60 months.
High Yield Savings Accounts offer the flexibility of up to nine (9) withdrawals in a statement cycle. The rate is variable, so it can increase and decrease over time. Certificates of Deposit lock in the interest rate, but there is an early withdrawal penalty.
The initial funding of a CD during opening is the primary way to add funds. However, you may add funds during the 10 calendar-day period (grace period) following the Maturity Date. At maturity, your CD will automatically renew, but there is a 10 calendar-day grace period during which you can add or withdraw funds from your CD account without penalty.
The Maturity Date is the date your CD account is scheduled to be renewed or closed. A penalty may be imposed for a withdrawal of principal before the Maturity Date. Your CD will automatically renew on the Maturity Date, unless we are no longer offering a CD with the same term as your maturing CD. At maturity, you will have a 10 calendar-day period (grace period) during which you can withdraw funds from your CD account without penalty. You may prevent automatic renewal if you call us prior to the maturity date, in order to change the maturity option, or if we receive written notice from you before the end of the grace period.
For more information on the terms and conditions of your CD, please see the personalsavings.americanexpress.com/deposit_terms for additional terms and conditions and Truth-In-Savings disclosures. Also see “Automatic Renewal”.
Personal Savings does not allow partial withdrawals from our CD accounts. If you wish to make a withdrawal, you will be required to withdraw the full amount in your account and the account will be closed.
A penalty will be imposed if you withdraw principal from your CD before maturity, or if your CD is closed for any other reason before maturity. (In certain circumstances, such as the death or incompetence of an account holder, we may agree to waive the early withdrawal penalty.) You understand that, if the amount of the penalty is greater than the available interest earned or credited on your CD, we will deduct the difference from your principal.
Note: If your CD was opened or last renewed before April 1, 2018, please see your original account disclosure for the penalty that will apply.
Interest on all Personal Savings accounts compounds daily and posts to the account monthly. You can choose to receive payments of interest from your Certificate of Deposit account. You can have the interest paid out to you via monthly transfer to your Personal Savings account or linked external account. You can also choose to have the interest paid via check on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis. If you choose to have interest paid out, instead of remaining in the account, it will affect the Annual Percentage Rate Earned (APYE) because the Annual Percentage Rate (APY) is calculated assuming the interest will remain on deposit.
Once you open an American Express Personal Savings account, you can pay your American Express Card bill with your American Express Personal Savings High Yield Savings Account by following these steps:
Please know, this will use one of your nine withdrawals per statement cycle.
American Express Personal Savings accounts are not meant for everyday spending. ATM cards, debit cards, or checks are not provided. You may make up to nine (9) withdrawals or transfers out of your High Yield Savings Account during a monthly statement cycle.

Request for Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and Certification (Form W-9)
American Express National Bank is required by law to withhold and remit to the IRS a specified percentage of interest paid to your account under certain conditions. To ensure accurate reporting on Form 1099-INT – and to avoid potential backup withholding – you should verify that your correct legal name and taxpayer identification number (“TIN”) are on file with American Express National Bank by completing and signing the Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification (Substitute Form W-9) contained in the online application or in the Welcome Kit. Your TIN may be in one of the following forms:
Accounts opened over the phone will be subject to backup withholding until American Express National Bank receives a completed and signed New Account Form, which includes the Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification (Substitute Form W-9) mentioned above.
American Express Personal Savings statements are separate from American Express Card account statements and will be sent to you separately.
Please fund your High-Yield account within 60 days after receiving approval of application; otherwise, your account will be closed.
Please fund your Certificate of Deposit account within 30 days after receiving approval of application in order to lock in your CD interest rate. If you do not fund your CD account within 60 days after receiving approval of application, your account will be closed.
No minimum deposit is required to open your American Express Personal Savings account.
Yes. Accounts that remain with a zero balance for 180 days are closed automatically.
Click here to Create Online Access or click the link in the menu bar at the top of the page.
In order to fund an American Express Personal Saving Account electronically, the primary applicant will need the Routing and Account numbers of the external account from which the funds are being transferred. This external account must also be in the name of the primary applicant. When initiating funding during the application process, the funding amount entered will be automatically transferred upon completion of the linkage of the external bank account to the new Personal Savings account, but the transfer will not appear online until the day following the linkage.
An Individual Account is an account in the name of one person. A Joint Account with Right of Survivorship (and not as Tenants in Common) is an account in the name of two persons. Each account holder intends that when they die, the balance in the account (subject to any previous pledge to which we have agreed) will belong to the survivor.
Please note: The interest earned on the account will be reported to the IRS under the Social Security Number of the primary (first named) account holder. Each joint account holder has equal access to the Joint Account but does not have access to online tax forms. American Express National Bank may act on instructions and notices we receive from any one joint account holder.
If you clear your internet browser’s “cookies”, change your password, or log in from a different device (computer, smart phone, or tablet) – or if you do not check the “Remember this device” box when you enter your code, we will provide you with a one-time identification code to verify your identity. This one-time identification code is one of a number of security measures Personal Savings uses to protect the security of your account.
We send the one-time identification code to you by email, SMS text message, or phone call to ensure we are communicating with the authorized account holder. If you are consistently using the same device and the same password, and are still required to use a one-time identification code, please ensure you are checking the “Remember this device” checkbox when you enter the code. If you are, then check your browser and privacy settings, as your browser may be automatically clearing cookies after every session.
You can change your password when logged in by clicking the My Profile tab and selecting Change Password. You need to enter your current password in order to create your new password. The same password cannot be used consecutively.
If you have forgotten your user name or password, go to the login page and click either the “Forgot User Name?” or “Forgot Password?” link and follow the prompts.
If you are locked out of your account (and the page requests you to contact us), please call us at 1-800-446-6307 and ask the Representative to issue you a temporary 6-digit password. This method will allow you to keep your current password.
Password Requirement
If you change your password or log in from a different device, we will provide you with a one-time identification code to verify your identity. This one-time identification code is one of a number of security measures American Express National Bank uses to protect the security of your account. We send the one-time identification code to you by email, SMS (Text) message, or phone call to ensure we are communicating with the authorized account holder.
For phone, the one-time identification code can only be sent to direct lines. If you select this option, and your phone number requires dialing an extension, you will not receive your one-time identification code. For email, some internet service providers and corporate email servers may block these messages. Consequently, they are located in a “junk” folder or are not delivered at all. Text message is usually the fastest and most reliable delivery method. Please note that while we try to send the code immediately, many factors may delay when you receive the code in your inbox or mobile device.

On the day you initiate your transaction on the Personal Savings website, the amount will be reflected in your Current Balance and will begin/stop earning interest immediately. Funds transferred into your Personal Savings account will be available for withdrawal on the 5th business day‡ after the deposit is initiated. External banks are required to reflect funds transferred to them within 2 business days, but most will do it within one business day. If you are eligible for, and select, expedited transfers, the bank could reflect your transfer as soon as the same day.
Please Note: These time estimates do not include the time needed to link an external bank account to your Personal Savings account. Learn more about linking external accounts
If you initiate a transfer from your Personal Savings account using your external bank's website, we will usually receive the transfer request within 1-2 business days.‡ The transfer will be reflected in your Current Balance and Available Balance the following morning. American Express Personal Savings accounts must be used for personal, family, or household purposes only, and may not be opened in the name of a trust, IRA, or business. You may not link business accounts, IRA accounts, or trust accounts to your American Express Personal Savings account(s). We may, at any time and without notice to you, close your account and terminate the account agreement, or freeze your account if you use the account for business or commercial purposes or if you link your account to a business account or an account that you do not own.
Instead of trust accounts, we offer Payable on Death (POD) accounts. Read more about POD accounts
Payable on Death (POD) accounts let you designate that funds in your Personal Savings account be payable after your death (and after the death of any joint owner(s) of the account) to one or more surviving individual beneficiaries without having to set up a trust. Beneficiaries named on POD accounts must be individuals; POD accounts cannot be set up in the names of trusts. Certain state law restrictions apply to POD accounts. Please consult an attorney or a qualified estate planning professional before designating your account as a POD account. Personal Savings accounts can only be opened in the name or names of individuals, and not in the names of trusts.
You may designate your individual or joint American Express Personal Savings account as a POD account by using the required Beneficiary Designation Form. You may designate up to six (6) beneficiaries per account. Visit personalsavings.americanexpress.com/contactus to download the Beneficiary Designation Form.
You can change or modify beneficiaries online at any time and as often as you would like. To view, add, remove or edit beneficiaries, use the drop-down menu in the ‘My Profile’ tab, select ‘Manage Beneficiaries’, then select the account you would like to update.
Below is some helpful information about adding beneficiaries to your account:
Once we receive all the appropriate paperwork confirming the account owner’s death (or the death of the last surviving joint account owner, if applicable), the balance of the account will be distributed equally among the living beneficiaries listed at that time. You are not able to specify different proportions to be distributed to each beneficiary.
It’s important to let you know that adding beneficiaries will designate your account as a Payable on Death (POD) account. Certain state law restrictions apply to POD accounts. Please consult an attorney or a qualified estate planning professional before designating your account as a POD account.
Backup Withholding is federal income tax on the interest payments on deposits. It is withheld by a bank when it does not have the account holder's Social Security Number. This is a specified percentage paid to the IRS on most kinds of transactions reported on variants of Form 1099. American Express National Bank is required by law to withhold and remit to the IRS 24% of interest paid to your account under certain conditions.
To ensure accurate reporting on Form 1099-INT – and to avoid potential backup withholding – you should verify that your correct legal name and taxpayer identification number (TIN) are on file with American Express National Bank. This is easily done. Simply complete and sign the Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification (Substitute Form W-9) contained in the application. Your TIN may be in one of the following forms:
Accounts opened over the phone will be subject to backup withholding until American Express National Bank receives a completed and signed New Account Form. The New Account Form includes the Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification (Substitute Form W-9) mentioned above.
Payments you receive will be subject to backup withholding if:
Download the New Account Form (Substitute Form W-9) for High-Yield Savings

You will need to link your Personal Savings account to your external checking or savings account at another bank in order to transfer funds electronically. The linked external account must belong to you and have the same ownership as your Personal Savings account. Once you enter your external account credentials (your account and routing numbers), you will be sent test deposits in order to verify that account.
Test Deposits
Test deposits are two small credits that we send for security purposes to the external bank account you would like linked. These test deposits will be labeled AXP TEST, will be less than $0.99 each, and will not appear in your external bank account until 2-4 business days after you initiate the linkage. In order to successfully link the external account to your Personal Savings account, you will need to correctly verify these test deposits. (Please note: No American Express employees can see the amounts, and the only way that you can obtain the correct amounts is by accessing the external bank’s website or by calling them.) Once you have obtained the correct amounts from your external bank, you can enter these test deposit amounts and link your accounts.
Complete the following steps to ensure your accounts are successfully linked:
Mailing a Check
If you choose to link your external bank account by mail, please send the signed and dated External Account Linkage Form along with a live (not voided) personal check for deposit which meets the following criteria:
A minimum deposit of $.01 must be made to complete the account linkage process.
Mail the check with the signed and dated External Account Linkage Form to:

To help the United States Government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, Federal law requires us to obtain, verify and record information that identifies each person who opens an account.
What this means for you? When you open an account, we will ask for your name, a street address, date of birth, and an identification number, such as a Social Security Number, which Federal law requires us to obtain. We may also ask to see your driver’s license or other identifying documents that allow us to identify you. We appreciate your cooperation.
At American Express we want you to be safe and secure when you bank with us online or by mobile device.

How We Protect You:
Identity theft is the illegal use of your name or personal information to open credit accounts, bank accounts, mobile phone accounts, and more – or to illegally assume ownership of existing accounts you already legitimately hold.
What to watch out for:
Identity theft may occur with the loss or theft of a wallet or a purse, but there are other ways identity thieves can obtain your personal information. By using care and common sense, you can avoid these identity theft tactics:
At American Express we work hard to protect you from fraud, but your active involvement plays a very important role. Here are some simple and important steps you can take to help reduce your risk:
MONITOR YOUR ACCOUNT ACTIVITY ONLINE
Accessing your account online is a great way to stay up to date on recent transfers and to monitor your account for irregular activity. Sign on at least once a week and review your account information. Always remember to log off from your online session when you are done. This will help prevent anyone using that computer from accessing your information. Haven’t set up Online Account Access? Go to personalsavings.americanexpress.com/onlinebanking.
SET UP ACCOUNT ALERTS
Sign up for email account alerts and stay up to date with your account activity. Log into the Personal Savings website and click on Manage Your Alerts within the Alerts Tab.
REVIEW YOUR CREDIT REPORT REGULARLY
Make sure to regularly review your Credit Report for any inaccurate information or for transactions you did not authorize.
CREATE UNIQUE PASSWORDS AND PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS
When you create your User ID, password, or personal identification number, avoid using easy-to-find information such as your date of birth or the last four digits of your Social Security Number. Make your password harder to guess. Consider using a combination of upper and lower case letters, along with numbers and special characters. Be sure to use different passwords across all your banking, email, and social media accounts. Consider updating all of your passwords regularly.
ALWAYS CHECK THE LAST LOGIN DATE AND TIME THAT WE DISPLAY WHEN LOGGED IN
Every time you sign in to your Personal Savings account, we will display the date and time of your last visit. If the last sign-on date and time does not look familiar to you, your online account access may have been compromised. Please contact us immediately at 1-800-446-6307.
BOOKMARK THE WEBSITES YOU VISIT MOST OFTEN IN YOUR FAVORITES
Get in the habit of using your favorites to navigate to the sites you use to perform financial transactions. This can help you safeguard against phishing scams.
SET UP “REMEMBER ME” ON WEBSITES YOU VISIT REGULARLY
Allow the Personal Savings website to remember your User Name on your personal computer, so that your User Name is automatically entered into the Log In box with every visit. This will help confirm you are on the genuine Personal Savings website. A fraudulent site will not know your User Name.
Note: Never use the Remember Me functionality on a public or shared computer. Take care when creating a unique password to access your account – and safeguard that password.
DO NOT ALLOW BROWSERS TO REMEMBER YOUR PASSWORD
If you allow a browser to remember your password, then someone else accessing your computer, phone, or mobile device may be able to learn your password and use it to defraud you.
GO PAPERLESS
Help reduce the risk of mail fraud by switching to Paperless Statements. Log in to the Personal Savings website and change your statement delivery method on the My Information page within the My Profile tab.
SECURE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION
Keep your sensitive personal information – your bank, mortgage and credit card statements, your Social Security cards and other identity documents, your passwords and other access information – in a safe place. Do this both at home and at work. Make sure this information is accessible to only you. Before discarding, make sure to shred documents which contain personal information about you.
Before you disclose any personal information – verbally, or in a document, or online – make sure you know why it is required and how it will be used. Do not give out your Social Security Number to people or companies you do not know. Be careful of over-sharing personal information on social networks. Avoid creating a trail of information which thieves can follow and use.
American Express takes online security very seriously. Below are examples of the ways we protect your account:
SELF-SELECTED USER ID AND PASSWORD
When you sign up for online banking, American Express will ask you to create your own User Name and Password. You will use these each time you access your Personal Savings account online. This confidential information is automatically encrypted during transmission using encryption technology. Additionally, we use multiple security measures to ensure account login activities are protected, to be used only by authorized users.
SECURE WEBSITE FOR SERVICING YOUR ACCOUNT
American Express uses 128-bit Secure Sockets layer (SSL) technology. This means that when you are on our secure website, the data transferred between you and American Express is encrypted. We also use strong encryption to protect all personal, identifiable information we house in our data systems.
AUTOMATIC TIME-OUTS
For your safety, we automatically log you out after 10 minutes of inactivity. If this happens, we require that you to log in again, in order to re-access your account on personalsavings.americanexpress.com. A safeguard against leaving yourself vulnerable, this prevents you from accidentally staying logged in on a public device beyond that period of inactivity.
REMEMBER ME
For your convenience, certain American Express websites have the ability to remember your User ID on your computer. Each time you visit that American Express site, your User Name (or a partially-masked version) will already be in the log in box. This will help confirm that you are on the genuine Personal Savings website. An imposter site typically would not know your User Name.
Note: Never use the "Remember Me" functionality on a public or shared computer. Take care in creating a unique password to access your account – and in safeguarding that password.
EMAIL CONFIRMATION OF PASSWORD CHANGE OR RECOVERY
American Express National Bank will send you an automatic email confirmation request when you try to recover your password. If you receive such an email, but you did not try recently to recover your password, call us immediately at 1-800-446-6307.
PHONE SECURITY QUESTION AND ANSWER
When you contact us for assistance, the Phone Security Question and Answer is one of several authentication measures we utilize to ensure we are conducting business with you and only you. If you would like to set up or change your existing Phone Security Question, simply call us at 1-800-446-6307.
We take steps to let you know a communication from us is legitimate. Nearly every email you receive from American Express related to your Personal Savings account will contain your first name and the last four digits of your account number.
If you receive an email regarding your account which does not contain this information, it may be fraudulent. If you are concerned about the legitimacy of any email from Personal Savings or American Express National Bank, immediately forward the email to spoof@americanexpress.com so we may take the appropriate action.
The Re-authentication Key and One-Time Password SMS (Text) Terms and Conditions are as follows:
To open a High Yield Savings Account, click the ”Apply for a Savings Account” button on the Home or HYSA pages. To open a Certificate of Deposit, click the “Apply for a Certificate of Deposit” button on the CD page.

The external bank will typically alert you when the funds are available.

Yes. You will need to endorse the check on the back and then write “For Deposit Only in Account” followed by your Personal Savings account number. However, it is more secure to make the check payable to American Express National Bank and writing your Personal Savings account number on the memo line.

To get your account number, log in to your account by clicking here. Then select "Show Account Numbers" in the top right corner of the page. Your full account number will display in the dashboard section, under "My Accounts".
American Express National Bank reserves the right to refuse, return, or limit any deposit you make to your account, and to set a maximum total account balance per depositor, in our discretion. The current maximum total account balance is $5 million.
Should interest cause your balance to exceed $5M, you will continue to receive interest and your account balance can grow to exceed $5M. However, you will not be able to make any transactions that would result in the balance remaining in excess of $5M. No deposits can be made that would cause the balance to exceed $5M. In order to make an online withdrawal if the account balance has exceeded $5M, you will be required to withdraw an amount that would bring the balance to $5M or less. If you have a balance above $5M and you want to withdraw only a portion of the amount that exceeds $5M, please call 1-800-446-6307 to speak with a representative.
Interest Rate is the annualized rate applied to the principal balance of the account each day in order to determine the amount of interest that has accrued on that day’s principal balance. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) reflects the effect of compounding frequency (Personal Savings accounts are compounded daily) on the interest rate over a 365-day period.
For more information, please see the Deposit Account Agreement for additional terms and conditions and Truth-In-Savings disclosures.
To open a High Yield Savings Account, click the ”Apply for a Savings Account” button on the Home or HYSA pages. To open a Certificate of Deposit, click the “Apply for a Certificate of Deposit” button on the CD page.
American Express Personal Savings accounts are not meant for everyday spending. ATM cards, debit cards, or checks are not provided. You may make up to nine (9) withdrawals or transfers out of your High Yield Savings Account during a monthly statement cycle.

You can connect your American Express accounts so you can navigate between your American Express Card and Personal Savings accounts without having to log in and out each time. There will still be two separate sites for your Card and Personal Savings accounts with separate login credentials, however once you connect the accounts you will be able to easily navigate from one account to another.
To connect your accounts, follow these steps:
The external bank will typically alert you when the funds are available.
Download the CD New Account Form (Substitute Form W-9) for Certificate of Deposit

Deposits made by check are accepted at our sole discretion. We reserve the right to refuse, return, or limit any deposit you make to your account. Yes. You will need to endorse the check on the back and then write “For Deposit Only in Account” followed by your Personal Savings account number. However, it is more secure to make the check payable to American Express National Bank and writing your Personal Savings account number on the memo line.
American Express National Bank

Deposits made by check are accepted in our sole discretion. We reserve the right to refuse, return, or limit any deposit you make to your account. Examples of the types of items we do not accept for deposit include multiple-endorsed checks, counter checks, starter checks, travelers' checks, and money orders.

If you tell us within two (2) business days‡ after you learn of the loss or theft of your account access information or mobile device, your liability is limited to $50 if someone should access your account without your authorization. Immediately report any unauthorized transaction to us at 1-800-446-6307.
